Re: Engine for sale

Doing that 4.0 replacement, or something stronger?

Re: Engine for sale

Yup, dropping in a 99 HO, read that I could use the original harness, just add wiring for the 5&6 injectors, with of course a 4.0 ECU. Also using a 90 AW4 mated to it. I already have the harness and TCU for the AW4.

Re: Engine for sale

Cool, sounds great! If I still had my '97 Wrangler I'd take you up on it...but...

Re: Engine for sale

One note - it's been bugging me but I remembered.

On the 99 and 00 models, the 4.0 used the "0331" head. This head is prone to developing hairline cracks and leaking coolant into the oil (that's the most widespread symptom) causing early engine failure.

You may want to look into this prior to starting the job, and check out your head. There are several threads on it in the Cherokee section; the fix is to replace with a pre-99 head.

Oh yeah, and the cracks are way difficult to spot, and you don't get the coolant leak until the engine is good and hot.

Re: Engine for sale

Could I use a 90 renix head? I have a complete 90 4.0. Either that or I'll run it till it gives me trouble then swap it out. easy enough. Once the snow goes away, I'll start to break into it.

Re: Engine for sale

IIRC the Renix head can be used, but some minor modifications are needed, I think it was just some mounting points or something similar.

Yeah, with my 99 I had absolutely no indication of a problem, except I had an oil analysis done, which found the leak.

There's a thread in the Cherokee section....

Re: Engine for sale

Oh yeah, and the oil analysis guys said it would be ok for awhile if you just changed the oil frequently...they recommended every 2000 miles.

Re: Engine for sale

Well snow is gone, just need to sell this engine so I can get the ECU for the 4.0. Fired up the 2.5 today, running perfect still.

Re: Engine for sale

Figure with the 4.0,4 speed auto and the stock 4.10 gears it ought to run right well.!

Re: Engine for sale

Hope so! I was going to suggest posting in the Cherokee section, but I see you've already done that.

Re: Engine for sale

Will be getting started next week-end on pulling the engine and mock up the engine mount locations for welding.
