Being a friendly mechanic and its liabilities

Just got to thinking the other night. I am the type of guy to do somebodies brakes, half-shaft, or a tie rod ect... But lets say something catastrophic happened. Say a faulty part caused an accident. I would be held liable for installing said part. Wouldn't I? I am starting to think I shouldn't be so friendly its nice to help but I cannot take the risk.
