Wrangler Gas Tank 'Leaks'

My 1993 4.0L Wrangler ( mint condition - 57K miles ) has a leaking gas tank! I noticed the smell as I was at a shop dealing with another problem ( water pump replacement recently posted ). Gas was drip'n from the skid plate and apparently the leak is originating from the top of the tank. Perhaps this could result from a few rough u-turns I made entering the shop since I really haven't seen this problem before and it doesn't appear to continue as I placed the Wrangler in my garage. Since I don't have a gas cap ( recently left it at a gas station ), perhaps some gas spilled from the gasoline fill tube back to the top of the gas tank? I do have experience removing that skid plate since I had the rear cross member replaced last year. I do remember the body shop telling me that I didn't need the gas tank 'bands' ( one of which was broken ) since the skid plate would hold the tank quite well. Perhaps I am living with some poor advice?

Any suggestions how to diagnose this problem?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Roger

Re: Wrangler Gas Tank 'Leaks'

You need to replace the gas cap right away as it also keeps the tank pressure correct (emission thing).
Then see if you still have the leak smell.

Re: Wrangler Gas Tank 'Leaks'

Check the Tank vent hose. On my 93 Wrangler I noticed the same thing but only when the tank was 3/4 to full. Once the car was stopped it wouldn't leak because it's only the vent hose.

Re: Wrangler Gas Tank 'Leaks'

Ive recently had the same problem, if its a plastic tank, its more than likely cracked. id bet a dollar!. I replaced the tank from dealer $275.00, straps were $48.20, nuts $7.40 and new skid plate tank cover $111.00. gas to expensive to leave on the ground

Re: Wrangler Gas Tank 'Leaks'

There was a couple of Jeep and aftermarket(Federal Mogul) recalls concerning the fuel sender and rubber gasket leaks on some YJ's. After checking the obvious problems like inlet hose leaks or outlet leaks, the only proper way to correct this is to remove the tank and inspect everything, hoses, sender/fuel pump gasket, severely rusted retaining ring, look for cracks, etc. Remember the hot muffler and exhaust piping is right next to the tank which could ignite the vapors.
