Smog pump

I'm not that much of a mechanic so hope I phrase this correctly. This morning was advised by a friend that the smog pump on my 85 one-ton RAM van is shot ... and is what caused the recent breakage of the drive belt.
Coincidentally, had, some time back, asked a mechanic to remove smog stuff so that mileage might improve. He refused due to smog laws on the books; although, the county I live in has no smog requirements.

So, my question is this.......
.....should I worry about replacing the smog pump; or just let it go since it has achieved my earlier intent.

Secondly, if it is important I replace it, does anyone have one available at a reasonable price.
Thanks
doon
