Thoughts on I6 4.0L vs 3.7L?
Currently have a 1996 JGC with the 4.0L
Looking at the 2004+ line and the 3.7L engine. Anyone have experience with both as far as power comparison and other items of note in actual driving? Thanks. |

Re: Thoughts on I6 4.0L vs 3.7L?
I had the 3.7 in a Dodge pickup ('04). It always ran well and I had no issues whatsoever. It's a good engine, although in a full size truck I felt the need for more power. The 3.7 does have about 25HP over the 4.0, and gets slightly better mileage in the GC. (last year for the 4.0 was 2004)
HOWEVER....I hear there have been a lot of maintenance issues with the 2005-'11 Grand Cherokees. If you are looking to switch, I'd go either 03-04, or if you have the means, 2012+

Re: Thoughts on I6 4.0L vs 3.7L?
Thanks for the thoughts Fred.
I have been looking at a lot of 2004-2005's, and the 2004 with the 3.7L I drove seemed to have less power then the 4.0L I have at present, so I assume maybe the changeover happened mid 2004 run? Could be I just am used to one vehicle and didn't drive the test drive with the same gusto. Anyone else have thoughts? |

The 4.0 makes its power in the lower rpms, and makes torque down low. To get the power out of the 3.7 requires letting it rev. That's probably where you felt the difference.
