Passenger seat won't lock into position

I'm having problems with my front passenger seat not locking to the rail when the adjustment lever (manual) is released. Most of the time, I can get it to lock in the full-forward or full-back positions, but it mostly does not lock in any other position. Does this sound like a broken latch mechanism or could there be debris jamming the mechanism? Any help is appreciated!!

Probably just needs lubed. Potato chip crumbs, carpet fibers, dog hair, dust, and other junk turn the light grease in those latches into sticky thick paste over the years. Nothing a little jet of WD40 won't fix.

Re: Passenger seat won't lock into position

Thanks. Any suggestions on where to apply lube? Near where one would pull on the latch, near where the cylindrical actuator/mechanism acts on the rail, or along the rail? It's not very clear to me.

You'll have to look. Get your head under there and look for where the handle meets the mechanism.

Worst case scenario you take out four bolts and remove the seat. That way you can turn it upside down and it will be obvious where its hanging up.

Re: Passenger seat won't lock into position

Thanks. I will try to WD40 near the handle. I was concerned about removing the seat (thought it would be too much trouble). Based on your advice, it sounds like it is very easy (4 bolts?). Are all car models so simple (nothing on the VW seems simple)? Any additional advice to ensure I don't further complicate the problem by removing the chair? Given the safety role of the rail, I'm a still concerned that I will mess-up something.

Re: Passenger seat won't lock into position

Thank you VERY MUCH Curtis73. Surgical strike with the WD40 immediately worked. I've had it temporarily work before, but I think this was a permanent fix. Thanks again!!

Still would like to hear your comments on removing seat (my previous post) for future reference.

Re: Passenger seat won't lock into position

most seats are 4 bolts....getting to them isn't always easy though. Most manual seats are fairly easy though

Re: Passenger seat won't lock into position

Some cars are so simple. There are typically 4 bolts that go down into the floor. The nut is welded to the floor pan, so you just need a ratchet and socket.

Replacing them is just the reverse. Set the seat in, start the bolts by hand, then drive them home.
