Unhappy poor gas mileage with 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic

I just purchased a 2000 Jeeep Cherokee Classic. It has 36K miles and is in excellent condition. It gets very poor gas mileage, only 8-10 mpg! Is this normal for this vehicle or could some problem be causing this poor gas mileage? Thanks, Don

Wow, that is bad mileage.

Do you have a V8 or 6 cyl ?

Two whl drive or Four whl dr ?

Automatic or manual ?

I've got a 99 Cherokee Sport, 4dr, two whl drive, automatic.

While towing a show car on flatbed 2 axle trailer, it's gotten between 14 - 16 mpg - and that was at 70 - 75 mph.

Not sure what the normal mileage should be, as I have only used it for towing & never check it under "normal" driving conditions.

I think I remember 18 mpg using the cruise control once.

Unless your running around in 4 whl drive low at 5 grand with the emergency brake on, I can't understand the low mileage.

Might have the injectors checked out.

Wish you luck.

I have a 2000 Straight six 4wd classic 60,000 just over
I personaly average 16.2mpg but if i drove like a sane person i can squeeze 22 mpg
about two weeks ago i clogged my injectors and could see the needle move as i drove down the road
If you can find grease out try that with about half a tank

I am glad I found this forum...I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Ltd. and I am getting what I feel is poor mileage...13mpg in town...15mpg on the highway...straight 6..auto..Quadratrac. It has about 156,000 km on it...
I just changed the fuel filter and plugs...and that made a bit of difference but not much....anything else I should look for??
