Re: Nailpolish?!

Yes, you have to use lacquer thinner for most nail polish to thin it enough to spray, but it makes some fan-flipping-tastic paintjobs that are hard as...well...nails haha! once the paint is fully cured, you can handle it all day long and not ruin the finish, it's really great.

Just don't spray nail polish over enamel or acrylic paint....bad things happen.

Re: Nailpolish?!

Nail polish looks great as a finish on models, but I've occasionally had problems with the "fast dry" types wrinkling and/or attacking the primer below. Just a heads up.

Re: Nailpolish?!

If you have a Sally Beauty store where you live you can get a bottle of thinner for about 3 bucks. I don't know why big box stores don't sell thinner, just remover. There are some pretty cool colors too. Why is there a billion shades of red anyway??

Re: Nailpolish?!

I use laquer thinner sometimes but prefer Scalefinishes.com enamel reducer when I have it on hand. I mix it 1:1 and shoot it at around 18-25 p.s.i. depending on the consistency. I like using them because I have access to waaaaaaaay more colors than just using paints. Nail polish paintjobs I've done...

Re: Nailpolish?!

I looked into doing this a few years ago. The girlfriend was sporting a rich emerald pearl color I wanted to spray a car with. I reasoned it wouldn't work because her polish remover was acetone based which led me to assume (wrongly I guess) that the polish had to be reduced with the same stuff. I've never had much luck shooting acetone paints because of the volatility. The paint always dries before it reaches the surface.

Re: Nailpolish?!

Just tried it myself this afternoon.
Picked up a bottle of nail polish on sale for about $1.99.
Mixed roughly 1:1 with some PPG ruducer I had.
Around 20 psi it laid down nice and flat.

Sprayed over some primer sealer that I use under automotive paints.

Worked great!

Re: Nailpolish?!

Hmm. I just happen to need a wild paint job for a custom Katana I'm working on in a certain group build. I think this might just be what I'm looking for.

Re: Nailpolish?!

If you mix it just right, you can make candy colors too. Lay down your metallic base coat of what ever you want color nail polish, then mix your top candy color about 20% color to clear, maybe even closer to 10% color to clear (you'll find your own ratio) then top it off with the rest of the clear you didn't mix into your candy color. it comes out great with a little practice of mixing.
