Re: Spoilers/ "Wings" Pointless on FWD Cars?
Read and understand Bernoulli's "theory" and L=(Cl*P*V^2*A)/2...go out and do some calulations on your average "spoiler" and tell me how much downforce you are actually creating...

Re: Spoilers/ "Wings" Pointless on FWD Cars?
well since im bored ill do it for you...
-Lets say your spoiler is 36" wide and 6" across, that is 1.5sqft. that is A -Air pressure is 760mm Hg or 0.002377slugs / cubic foot. that is P -at 80mph, or 117 ft/sec, that is V -and for ease lets say it has a lift coefficent of -0.4. So Lift = (-0.4*0.0023769 slugs/cuft *117ft/sec^2*1.5sqft)/2 Lift= (-0.4*0.0023769*13689*1.5)/2 Lift= -9.76lbs.... Amazing... you can get that from throwing some books in the trunk... would you like to talk about the extra drag they create as well? but lets say this is an uber Civic... lets double velocity to 234ft/sec or 160mph and say its lift coefficent is -0.6 Lift = (-0.6*0.0023769*234^2*1.5)/2 Lift = (-0.6*0.0023769*54756*1.5)/2 Lift= -58.57lbs im not saying spoilers are ineffective...im saying your average JC whitney spoiler wont have even a lift coefficent of -0.6 if you would like to read up on this check out "How Airplanes Work" on howstuffworks.com. *note* the force is negative because it is downward |

What about on an AWD vehicle? Do they work then?
