A/T spin/whine sound at initial take off
My '03 DC makes an interested sound when I have shifted out of park or reverse and into drive. I then slowly begin to accelerate and almost immediately hear a short, spinning sound come from the A/T area. There does not appear to be any adverse affects coinciding with the noise. I just think it is odd, but again, this is my first Toyota Truck with an Automatic and I would have prefered the 5sp but it is unavailable in the DC V6.

Re: A/T spin/whine sound at initial take off
I am bringing this thread back from the dead but I wonder if anyone has noticed a similar problem.
I bought a 2006 a couple weeks ago. It has under 2000 km on it. It is a 2WD 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission. It makes a noise like that right before it shifts up. It doesn't do it all the time and I think it does it when it is cold outside. It is louder and more frequent shortly after starting the truck but it still does it after driving for half an hour. The past week has been around -20 degrees Celsius / -5 degrees Fahrenheit. |

It is a weird sound. It makes sense that it is coming from the torque converter. It has a spinning, whirring, almost whistling sound to it. The whining noise will stay on for as long as I maintain the same speed. If I let up or press down on the gas the noise goes away. At first I thought it appeared around 1800 to 1900 RPM but I have noticed it around 2100 RPM (I think I was going uphill that time). It happens at a few different speeds so it doesn't seem to be tied to shifting between two particular gears. I have only heard it when shifting up, not down. |

Re: A/T spin/whine sound at initial take off
I talked to a dealer mechanic. He said it was not a common question. That kind of worried me. I would have thought if they all made that noise most people would ask about it.
He figures it could be coming from the fluid or planetary gears. It does not do it all the time and the weather has warmed up so it's not doing it at all. He can't really look at it because he won't hear the noise or be able to track it down. He did say it is under warranty so if it starts happening all the time or the transmission falls out, etc they will fix it and in the mean time don't worry about it. |
