it's not a 'check engine' lamp your seeing! it's the 'check control' lamp, advising you to look up to the 'check control panel' above the review mirror. take a peak and you'll get the functions. the lighting checks are dynamic so the 'brake lamp' test isn't completed until you step on the brake..have fun.

Thanks Jeff now that i think about it there is 1 light up there that stays on its the low beam light indicating the bulb is burned out but the last owner said its always been on but the lights works.

If the lights work fine, then it might be a brake wear sensor, or ABS sensor that might have been tripped. Only way to get rid of this is to reset the system. That is where the reset tool or OBD scan tools come in handy so you can reset your system. If you do not have them take a look online and there is a way you can hotwire it to reset the system but I cannot honestly tell you that on here. Jared |

Re: 1986 bmw 325
Whoops..sorry, OK...#1, PLEASE DON'T 'HOT WIRE' ANYTHING ! unless you've a schematic in hand and can actually read it....#2, the 'pad wear' lamp are problematic in E30 clusters and can't be relied on unless the main board is known to be good....#3, NO E24, E28 or E30 ABS has self-diagnosis, no scan tool or system access other than a 'break-out box' or pin tests at the control unit. the same is true for early E24 SRS. There is no reset feature, when you fix the system, the lamp goes out......hope this is of help.............jb.
