01 Sonata Engine Stopped while in Motion

So here's the deal with my automatic 01 Sonata GL 2.4 L. During the day yesterday i had a moment where the car was turned on, was idling for two minutes and then suddenly it turned off. I wasnt paying attention and thought i never actually turned it on; thought no more of it.

Later that night i was driving on the road at around 60 km/h when the engine suddenly went dead. I pulled over. No fluid leaks, all lights are on. Attempted to crank the car; car cranks fine (indefinately if i keep holding the key there) but engine never turned on. I tried this several times...at one point i attempted it and the engine even turned on for all of 2 seconds and died again. Lots of fuel, temperature guage okay.

Could this be a cam sensor? Any theories would be appreciated....i'd like to get an idea of how major a problem this might be.

thanks!

If you lost your timig belt, you would have trashed your engine. It is an interference motor, the pistons will hit the valves, nasty things happen.

I don't know on this car but on a couple other cars I have seen the cam sensor go bad, sounds likely. They are just a reed switch and a magnet, when a tooth comes by it closes the switch. They are pretty unreliable in any car. I would change it just for openers.
