Thinking about using the RB Motion 1/20 DFV valve cover detail kit

I am wondering if this is worth it or not. I know he makes top notch stuff, but I'm not sure it will be worth the trouble in this small of a scale. Just looking for opinions.

I love his stuff too, but this is my first F1 car and it's a lot of little parts. I'm just not convinced it would stand out enough to be worth the trouble. Then again I bought all the E.Jan/MFH upgrade parts for the kit, so I might as well.

I was hoping someone here has used the DFV fittings from him

I think that adds a lot to the look of the engine. I def want it for my 1/12 BT44B.

Having the ability to make that kind of stuff on my own, there is the temptation to go wild and put little boltheads everywhere. But I've learned that it usually doesn't look right in 1/24. The bolts draw disproportionate attention to themselves, and are distracting to the overall effect- that is to say, usually they look wrong, no matter how small they are.

I would be very cautious to use them even in 1/20. I'm not convinced they would make the appearance better or more correct.

But in 1/12, bring it!!!

If it is your first F1 kit I'd probably go easy on the aftermarket parts.

I don't know which version of the DFV you are building but more than adding the bolts, you probably want to ensure that you have replacements for the intake trumpets (kit pieces generally look awful IMHO) and the mesh covers for the trumpets.

To give you some kind of comparison, this is the DFV on m Tyrell P34 where the bolts are simply dry brushed with metallic paint. The trumpets are aluminum wire boots and the mesh - IIRC - was an MFH aftermarket part.




On the other side of the scale, there was a crap load of RBM nuts, bolts and other parts put onto this Lotus 25…

too late. It's the Lotus Type 79 (1978)

I bought a ton of stuff already.

I started my 312 T3 as practice after thinking about it. No details on this one except turned funnels. This will give me a little understanding on how to approach the F1 car.

That does help, thank you. The MFH mesh covers are not available any more. I am trying to track them down, but no luck. I had some in my cart at Hobby Search, but waited and now they are sold out.


My only issue with the turned bolts is they look too new, but that can be fixed easily.

I used the kit on my Tyrell p34, it look awesome in my opinion BUT, be prepare to have trouble drilling all the holes and breaking drills bits in the process. My first order of drill bits wasn't enough and I had to re-order and wait to continue...

Also, if your going to had that, you'll have to had everything you could think of too, but that you already know...

If you have the Tamiya version it already comes with funnel mesh. If you have the Hasegawa version I'd get their photo-etch set which comes with a pair of very nice mesh.

Hobby Easy has the Studio 27 funnel in stock, in case you need them.

If your aftermarket sets include valve covers I'd save them for another project. The ones in either version are very usable. The aftermarket ones will be useful when you build some of the older Tamiya kits.

Funny story; Since I am new to F1, I thought I had bought the Type 79, when it turns out I have the Type 78. The Type 79 kit is now incoming.

The only thing left would be a wheel set, but they are pricey.

I am more into the act of building the models than I am the history and accuracy, but modeling has made me become more interested in the heritage and history of the race cars. I often find myself watching Youtube videos for hours of the cars I have kits of.
