O2 sensor location

My CEL is on. I had the codes pulled and it was P0140. This is a 2001 with the 3.3. I have the sensor already, but I've gotten two different locations from two different parts guys on just which sensor is actually bad. As I understand it there are 3 O2 sensors on a 2001; two before the cat and one after. Can someone tell me which one the code is referring to so I replace the correct one?

Oh, and is it still a no-no to use teflon tape on O2 sensors?

The code states it is sensor 2. That indicates the one after the cat.

FSM says to clean threads with a special tool and use the proper anit - sieze compound on the sensor threads which I believe is normally on a new sensor. I do not believe it is the normal anti-seize you would normally buy, I would check at parts stores for it.

Ok, so it seems that I don't have an O2 sensor after the cat. I looked everywhere, all the way back to the tip of the tailpipe, and can't find it. I called another parts store to verify what the code is for, and they say the same thing: after the cat. I asked the wife (who had the codes read at the oil change place) if she was sure the code was correct and she said the guy even watched her right it down to make sure she had it right.

My next step is going to be to stop at a Ford dealer and see if they can show me in a parts book where the sensor is supposed to be. Short of buying a reader myself, or paying someone to read the codes, is there a way I can read them myself? On my old Taurus' you could short some pins with a paperclip and count the CEL blinking. Of course, that was EEC4, this 2001 van is likely OBD1; maybe it's not that easy.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Go to section EC Page 249, it shows the location of the sensor after the catalast convertor.

Autozone, checkers, etc. will read your codes on a 2001 for free. They will just try to sell you parts for it. 2001 is a OBDII vehicle.
