97 Corolla with 183K miles, should I change timing-belt?

Probably a dumb question. I have 183,000 miles on my 97 Corolla and I was thinking of changing the timing belt just to be safe. As long as it's apart, is there anything else I should change. I figured the water pump should probably get replaced also. All in all, i can't complain. This was my wife's first new car, and the only thing I have done to it is change the fluids, the tires, 1 tune-up, and fix it when I hit a deer. Heck, it still has the original brake pads. I am going for 200,000 before I change them.

My '97 has a chain, not a belt.

If it had a belt you"d probably be walking by now.

Okay, it has a chain and not a belt. Do these things break that often? Should I change it out now?

They don't break often, which is why you havent had to replace it yet. The chain should last the entire life of the engine, altough it isn't uncommon to have a timing chain replaced when you have tune ups. Don't worry about it til it craps out. Oil, Coolant, Auto trans fluid, tires, brakes, your good to go. F.y.i, toyota recommends you change your atf fluid every 15k miles in severe driving coditions such as trips under 5 miles, winter weather, extend high speed drives.
