2002 Gr. Prix winding noise as I accelerate

okay, new issue with my car....got it back from the whole intake manifold and CAT issue, and now it makes a winding noise as I accelerate, it starts humming at about 30-35 mph and then gets a bit louder at 50 mph and then you can hear it dissipate when I put the brakes to it, it winds down and it is an obvious winding/humming noise...I don't think it has anything to do with the powersteering because it is happening as I drive straight and doesn't seem to change noise wise when I turn the steering wheel. I think I still smell the coolant also, yesterday when I arrived home after the 62mile commute back home I could smell that sweet smell again...any suggestions??

2002, 3100 engine, 130,000 miles

Take it back to where you had it repaired and have it checked. There is a possibility that the manifold bolts may not have been torqued properly or there may be a problem with the hoses or radiator. If you don't see any leaks I would check the area around the manifold and all the areas where the hoses connect. It could be something simple.

I would also check the transmission to see if there is adequate fluid. It is possible that the front pump is going out of the transmission. Finally check for proper alignment of the serpentine belt, it can cause a similar problem with a whining. The alternator is also a common culprit. Just a few places to check! Good Luck!

It sounds like a transmission problem to me also, since it doesn't start making the noise until you hit a certain speed. Normally, an alternator, or belt driven accessory noise will start right away, and increase in volume and frequency as engine speed is increased, then drop as the trans shifts and rpm drops. I'd take it back to the shop as GTP suggests, because a vacuum leak will make noise as you describe, and may only pop up at that speed due to engine load parameters at that specific speed.
