1992 Grand Marquis - Check Engine Light
I have a 92 grand marquis, my check engine light comes on after about 5 miles of driving, stays on for anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes, then will go off and maybe not come back on for hours, or keeps coming on and off.
I don't notice any difference in fuel mileage or driveability. I bought a code reader and everything checks out ok. It gave me the 1-1-1 code Any suggestions? Chuck |

Re: 1992 Grand Marquis - Check Engine Light
We had the same problem with our '92 and were given two possibilities as the problem, (this was back in '95 so I don't remember what they were). However, they both were checked out and were not the problem. Everything checked normal and the car ran fine so we ignored the light. We gave the car to our daughter and they have run it for the last 3 years with the check engine light illuminated and it's still going strong. I hope this is of some help.

Actually, its funny that you posted this - a friend of mine has the same problem. He has no desire to learn anything about vehicles or how they work - so the light scares the hell out of him. From my expierences, it usually ends up being a sensor thats sending the signal for some reason or another. most commonly - the O2 sensor. Theres a good chance that i could be wrong though

I don't think its anything to worry about man, our 92' marquis does the EXACT same thing, same timeing and everything, just a thing with the mercs that year i guess.

Re: 1992 Grand Marquis - Check Engine Light
You can use some throttle body cleaner in the intake. Look on the driver's side of the intake (inside it with hose removed) and look for that small hole. That sensor tries to coordinate the speed/air/fuel ratios. Clean the hole so the sensor can read properly. That should take care of it.

thanks for all of the help - i trust that it is nothing to worry about anymore. i tried cleaning the throttle body, but the problem still persisted. I also tried adding injector cleaner to the gasoline when i filled the tank. My assumption is that i may have gotten a bad batch of gas, because i have not had any problems with it since i refilled (and i doubt that a bottle of injector cleaner could make such a dramatic change in performance). thank you for all of your advice.

Re: 1992 Grand Marquis - Check Engine Light
My 94 has had the same problem for 3 years now. I had a crate motor put in so I know the engine is fine. It's just one of the "smog" sensors malfunctioning. Was told not to worry about it. The Merc dealer wanted $500 to change the thing and wouldn't guarantee that it would fix the lite problem

Finally figured it out......FYI The EGR ports were clogged up. Cleaned them up of carbon and she's good as new! Light hasn't come on again for a month now. Thanks for all the help, Chuck |
