Thanks guys... I have decided to make this a fairly detailed bike due to the PE detail I am going to put into it with the SMD set.

I completed the tires above. Tamiya always provides superior tires in these bike kits. I scuffed them up and labeled them "S-1" which I believe stands for Scuff 1st set to the teams off some ref pics I came across. After I scuffed the tires I wiped them down with rubbing alcohol and proceeded to mount the rims which have one coat of 2 part clear directly over the black kit plastic. I detailed the tires out with tranfers from the kit and "marchesini" wheel decals....

Frame was cleaned and painted with Duplicolor black primer and then overshot with 2 coats of Krylon Semi FLat Black spray. I primed it first to prevent any crazing that krylon sometimes does.

Frame was detailed with CF decal on the foot peg leg guard? and all bolts were picked out with chrome silver. I added semi gloss to a few area for color contrast. If you look close the mounting plate that has several grouped holes were drilled out. Tamiya provided the imnpression of holes, but I drilled them out to look much more realistic and detailed. Its details like these I am going to try to pick out on the entire build.

Thats all for now!

Re: WIP:99 Red Bull YZR500 GP MOTO

Great work. It's details like the ones you mention that puts life into a bike kit. Drill all recessed hole markings, detail the chain, exchange tubing and cables etc. I think this bike will be stunning, your paint work is really great. I'll wait for some decalling!
best regards
Joel

I love when builder take so much care about the details. I try to do that on cars but only manage to achive it on bikes. Very nice work and I agree with Joel the paint on frame is flawless.

Thank you,

Tonight, I Assembled, painted, detailed and added the Photoetched parts to the engine. The hub in the 2&3 rd pics is a photoetched cover that really addes to the realism of the unit! The side of the airbox was covered in Scale auto style CF decal. I did not do the entire airbox becaus e you just dont see it all when all the fairings are assembled. The engine block was painted alcad steel, aluminum, and the oil cover was painted with tamiya dark copper as specified in the instructions.

SkylineFan, you're doing great! CF on airbox is....hmm...fantastic. PE looks great as well.

One thing I think you should rethink is this...

The RedBull decals needs a lot of attention to do your bike justice. The lower cowling doesn't have a tight fit enough for such a project. You can use the method to align the side decals but I don't think it's such a good idea for all of them.
best regards

Re: WIP:99 Red Bull YZR500 GP MOTO

oh, what I mean with "tight fit" isn't that it will leave a gap (it's Tamiya) more that the part will not stand very much preassure when installed, and to get those bulls down in the plastic you will need a lot of that... Bu t I guess you got my point.

SkylineFan,
The cf airbox looks incredible. Which clear did you use on it? Any problems with the clear eating the cf? I've done the one on my red bull also but I'm afraid to ruin it with clear. How difficult is the sms pe kit to use? It will be interesting to see how many pe parts you don't use.

I use future for the airbox. I brushed it on in about 3 good coats!

The SMS kit is not that difficult, patience is the key. I already scrapped the hose clamps. Too stiff and they kept scratching the flat black paint off the hose. I am not sure I will use the front rotor assemblies. They need to be painted anyhow. I am not sure at this point.

Re: WIP:99 Red Bull YZR500 GP MOTO

Great work so far Dave. Looking forward to further progress and use of the rest of the detail set, lots of small details in that set. Don't worry, once finished with all the little details, your eyes will only stay crossed for a few days. Only then, do you start the decaling.

"I use future for the airbox. I brushed it on in about 3 good coats!"

Viva La Future, wonderful stuff, don't forget to dip the windscreen in it.

Man, so many sweet bikes turning up here lately, I might have to hang out more often.
