I thought it was just weight over horespower. I have the specs for the '02 and '00. I compared both Auto SE's.

'02:

Horsepower 255 @ 5800 RPM
Torque 246 @ 4400 RPM
Curb Weight 3261 lbs. - 3224 lbs.

'00:
Horsepower 222 @ 6400 RPM
Torque 217 @ 4000 RPM
Curb Weight 3245 lbs. - 3199 lbs.

I guess the weight difference is the options. Lets compare lightest of each:

'02 3261 lbs with 255 hp

vs

'00 3245 lbs with 222 hp
-----------------------------

'02 is 12.79 lbs per hp
'00 is 14.62 lbs per hp

The '02 has the advantage.

Hope this helps

Erik

just a minor difference, but the lightest weight of 2000-01 is 3199lbs..
it comes out to 14.41lbs per hp...

well...that 3199lbs applies to 00-01 GXE with manual tranny...
and since there are no more manual tranny available in GXE trim for 02 models...the slight edge goes to 00-01 GXEs over the 02 counterpart..

I actually meant to say the heaviest, and I actually used the heaviest of both.

more than just HP...

With the additional torque with the new 3.5L, I would anticipate better power across the usable power band. Not to mention the HP figures shown have the '02 peaked at a lower rpm(5800 vs 6400). With a 6th gear(SE manual) to spread the power out better: '02 would spank '01... but I haven't raced one yet.
