coolant leak

I have a 97 passport(3.2L) that has a water leak,at first could not find leak but after backing vehicle up the driveway, I noticed antifreeze comimg from engine to belhousing area. checked surrounding areas and all seem to be dry.Are there freeze plugs on the back of the block or does anyone know of a cause for a leak in this location?

thanks

Re: coolant leak

there are two pipes under the intake they each have an o-ring on one end they dry rot and start leaking over the years espically if somone has recently been around them (have your valve cover gaskets recently been replaced)

Re: coolant leak

I had to repair the leaking o-rings at the top of the engine. It still leaked. I gave up and took it to the shop. They pressure tested it and reproduced the leak between the tranny bellhousing and the block. There sure are freeze plugs back there, and the book calls for 9 hrs. of labor to replace them. Not cheap. I also have a '97 3.2L with the auto tranny. Good luck!

What was your cost on that? I thought your repair bill was $400-500 or so??

In that case, Labor rates must be cheap where you live if it was a 9hr job.

Here, that kind of labor rate would be equal to a $630 job just for the repair.

I don't know, knocking hard on wood that I haven't developed those types of leaks, but paying close to $800-$1000 on an antifreeze leak behind the engine is just crazy - wish I had the time to do a lot of this stuff myself, but with it being a daily driver, I would have no choice but to take it in.

To be honest, I'm more paranoid of antifreeze leaks then anything!

Keep your fingers crossed for me, for at least another year or so.

Re: coolant leak

Thanks for the response! Was the o-ring issue easy to get to and what did you all have to remove. Thanks
