VW Type 1 Delivery Van
Here's my new project for a groupbuild on SPC
I have a lot of VW models as I'm a vw lover (and owner) myself, so it was hard to decided which one I want to build. I choose this nice VW Type 1 Delivery Van from Hasegawa. ![]() ![]() My theme for this car is Hoodride. Maybe I had to be one of the Hoodride groupbuilders but I had this idea already before that group was created ![]() The car wil be painted primer grey. White bumpers and some rust and dirt will create that hoodride look. I found a pic on the web which sounds like my ideas. ![]() I also want to make my own roofrack, and there will be an oldskool airco on the side (can anyone tell me what's the name of that thing?) The first problem are the wheels. I think i'll use the original wheels in black but I have also a set of Fuchs wheels which also looks cool. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With busselecta I made two reference pics. I really love the black original rims. Maybe with a whitewall they look cooler... A friend of my has made some nice custom hoodride decals for me. Kris.

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
Hi Kris,
unbeliavable, strange, cool.....your pics could be also taken at my desk.... Your plannings / drawings are very promissing! A real cool subject, i like that flat appearance of the blue. ALL THE BEST !! I'll be watching closely. I'll start my wip quite soon, althought my bully might be the number 241 in the still growing line of T1-entries......;-) Keep it coming! Best wishes Jochen |

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
First I searched for a roofrack on the internet.
![]() This one would be used as reference for my scratchbuild rack. First I bought some brasswire. At home I started to weld them together and get this: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After that it needed a silver base coat. ![]() ![]() After that was dry, I added a base coat for the instant rust. ![]() ![]() After addind the solution it starts to rust ![]() ![]() ![]() I used some ice cream lollysticks for the woodenpanels. I cutted them in halve and sanded them untill they are on scale. After that I gave them a wash with burnt sienna oilpaint. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next time i'll try to make a swam cooler. I want all the accesoires to be finished before I start with the body etc. Kris.

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
Last days I spent some time on making some new accesoires for my vw bus.
First I started with the exhaust, but this is hard to do cause the original exhuast from the kit is totally different. So I'll see in the end what I can do with it. Than I started with the swamp cooler. For those who thinks... WTF is that? It's an oldskool airco which is mounted on the passengerside of the car. You fill it with water and air will be stream trough the water and it will be cold air. When the driver opens the cooler, cold air will fill up the car. ![]() The real ones looks like this: ![]() ![]() ![]() I first collected two tubes which are the correct diameter. I cutted them with my tubecutter. ![]() ![]() With some milliput and tamiya putty I made it smooth. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now I have to make the mounting pillars on it, and also the gap which leads the air to the car. I also started with the body damage. First I made some dents on it and after that I made some rust damage on the wheelarches. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the coolest things an a T1 bus, are the safari windows. Hasegawa has theyre own thoughts about that and didn't made them for me. So I used some clear styrene from Evergreen and made my own safari window on the driverside. The passengerside will be closed. I have to paint the trim around the window in bodycolor and made the tubes which holds the windows opened. ![]() And a dryfit: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hope to paint the body this week. First it needs some white coats and than primer grey. I'll sand it down untill the white will be visible on some areas. I also will make one or two panels fully rusty ![]() Kris.

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
This weekend I received my custom made decals, but the measures were not right.
Two of the decals will be used, and the smaller ones will be made again this week. So I started with the body, because I wanted to paint it. First I added a layer of white primer, and two layers of TS-Pure White. After that I painted the primer grey on it. I thought it looked to light, so I searched for a darker grey. German Grey from Tamiya was the solution ![]() I also added some decals on the sides of the bus. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I also worked on the swampcooler. I made the air gap which leads the air through the window. ![]() ![]() I wanted some white bumpers on it, so I painted them white. I also added some embossing powder on the side ends which will be a base for the rust. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kris.

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
Another update from me.
I added some rust on the body and also sanded the body at different places to create an old paint, which shows the color underneath. I also painted the vw logo in white. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm already started on the chassis. The bus needs to be slammed, and I want to make dropped spindles on it. Kris.

Re: VW Type 1 Delivery Van
Today I made some more progress.
First I did some work on the body. I added the windows, painted the windowtrims and also painted the grey trim around the safari window. After that I added and painted the lights. The doorhandles are also placed and I gave the handles and lights some rust. With the rust from Tamiya's wheateringset I added a bit all over the body. I also didn't forget the bumpers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From the Gunze Sangyo HIGH DETAIL '66 VW Beetle I used some wheels and bumpers. This kit was incomplete so I used it for parts. Most of the parts like the wheels are from white metal. There is also a very nice PE set in it and I can use it for this build. The wheels are first painted with a creme color. After that I added some damage and rust on them. The bumpers are also rusty. These parts will be added on the roofrack like this: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And here's the PE frame. ![]() Kris.
