Coolant problem?
My mom has a 92 with the 3.1 in it. As of about a week or two ago the car has been losing coolant. I went out last night to fill it up so I did and then turned on the car to see if I could find a leak, As I am doing this I am getting hit in the face with coolant and it looks like it is coming from the water pump. Now I look around some more and there is dryed up coolant stains on the underside of hood all over belt and pullies and part of rad. in front of water pump. Now is this problem related to the water pump? Or is it from something else? And how hard is it to change a water pump on this car?
Thanks for the Help |

Re: Coolant problem?
Chances are it's all from the pump.
Easiest pump you will ever do. Loosen the pulley bolts with a quick snap of the wrench, do that with the belt still on, it helps hold the pulley still. Take the belt off, take the pulley off, there is about 6-8 small bolts that hold the pump to the casting, remove them, tap the pump with a mallet to break the old gasket seal and remove it, clean up the mounting surface (don't scratch the casting, be gentle, it's soft aluminum), then mount up the new one... You'll want to fill the system with the bleeders open, close it up and let it run about 10 minutes, then stop the motor and let it sit for about 10. Carefully open the radiator cap and bleeders, refill, close it up and road test. If the gauge spikes or wanders a lot, you still have some air to purge, repeat until it runs a steady temp. |

Re: Coolant problem?
IF your car has two bleeder valves, one at the T-stat and one at the transfer tube, here is the best bleed proceedure I know.
Jack the right front corner of the car up so the radiator cap is higher than the the engine. Open both bleeders, and slowly fill the coolant at the radiator cap until coolant comes out the bleeder near the t-stat. Close that bleeder and re-install the radiator cap. Remove the small bypass hose that comes off the transfer tube and connects to the front of the intake. Using a funnel, slowly fill the cooant thru the bypass hose until it comes out the second bleeder and the tube coming from the intake. Put your thumb over the tube to prevent more coolant from leaking out, and quickly re-attach the hose. Slowly let the car down off the jack, and as coolant starts to escape from the second bleeder, close it. You should be all good to go. Just to be sure, start the car and let it warm up. Crack each bleeder open starting with the one at the t-stat. If nothing but coolant comes out, you're done.
