acetone in gas?! 30-50% better MPG?!!!!

I'm just doing a little research here... Anyone heard of this?

I originally thought more gas vaporization might= detonation, but the third site says acetone has octane of 150.

This may be shady, all the resources I've seen have the same graph. It makes me think it may be another internet scam...

Re: acetone in gas?! 30-50% better MPG?!!!!

I want to hear BlazerLt's thinking on this. It's interesting because if you go to http://www.lubedev.com/ they sell oil testing equipment (BlazerLT can do that Lucas Gear Oil additive test). They promote doing all of your own testing and it seems like their articles are very informative, however they seem to blame the U.S's problems on foreign dependency of oil. He also says he got 30% better milage with Texaco gas- whatever.

I like how he pushes that you should do your own testing and verify his results, however I would like to see more information.

Re: acetone in gas?! 30-50% better MPG?!!!!

I gave it a try (500 ml bottle, added about 80 ml per tank fill), but didn't really notice anything ground breaking.

Mind you I was having fuel pump issues and probably I'm in terrible need of a new Distributor Cap and rotor (old one *ONLY* has 180,000 KMs).

I'll give it another try again once I get all the 'bugs' worked out.

I would wait before doing any of this.

Agreed...

I ran this question by one of our local radio "AutoTalk" guys and he said simply "stay away from this.....", "If it was a good idea, there would be acetone in the gas already....."

Run forest run.....

Gasoline eats thru rubber and plastic like "NO TOMMOROW" as well.

I suspect it has more to do with the type and grade of plastic that the parts are made out of. While I can't say there would be no problem, let me play devils advocate.

Acetone comes in 'plastic' bottles, and is therefore able to be stored for long periods (Years) in plastic bottles at 100% concentration.

Acetone in gasoline is at the 0.001% concentration. That's like only 70 ml per 45 Liter fillup. I'm afraid I just don't see it being a huge issue with the plastic or rubber parts in the engine.

When we look at ethonol enriched gasoline, they use about 20 % ethonol, and that stuff 'does' ruin engines at that concentration. So what they do is mix a pile of other chemicals into the fuel to reduce the action of the ethonol on plastic and rubber.

20% ethonol concentation vs 0.001% acetone concentration. The amount of acetone is 1/12,000th the concentration of ethonol which is commonly used in engines.

With acetone being stored for years in plastic, and looking at the fuel concentrations involved I don't see a problem.

Nect factor in the people that have been doing this for 'YEARS' with their engines with ZERO issues. I'm afraid I just don't see it being a problem.

That is my opinion, others are free to disagree with me.

If I actually saw an improvement in gas mileage of 30%!! YES, YOU BETTCHA I'D DO IT! - IN LESS THEN 10 SECONDS!

Slight problem is:
I tried it in my engine, I haven't seen any improvement what so ever, and certainly not at the 30% level. In fact it looked like my gas mileage went down.

Hence I stopped doing acetone. After i'm finished getting my new plug wires, cap-and-rotor in place, I plan on trying it again to see if there is an improvement.

Well we are...

But I think we're all too skeptical to try it! (and rightly so)

I think this guy got it right.....

There are lots of reasons why refiners would love to blend it in. They still don't. Why...becuase it can kill fuel system parts. It's not a conspiracy...it would already be there if not for the serious technical problems.

Give your car parts "The Acetone test"

I recently swapped out my fuel pressure regulator along with a few gasgets.

So what the heck, I dumped the old used parts into a bottle of 100% actetone. I'll letcha know if they melt away into 'nuthin'. I dumped the parts into the Actetone on Saterday.

24 hours later, I'm still waiting to see some kind of a problem with the parts, but there's absolutely 'diddley' happening to the parts at this time.

I'll keep people aware of my 'experiment' as time progresses.
