Re: paint not sticking

Well for one thing a primer would help. Second you should spray the side mirrors. Brush marks are bad, especially for the exterior.

Being cheap will end up costing you more in the end. Modeling is not an inexpensive hobby. Just buy a couple cans of Tamiya Fine Surface primer, and a can of Tamiya yellow.

Re: paint not sticking

...and as you are painting yellow it's not easier. Yellow is one of thoose hard to cover paints, if you use Tamiya acrylics it shouldn't be a problem to brush paint the mirrors as you could put on a rather thick layer without any problem. This paint shrinks very much so you wan't loose any detail that way. With enamels and brushpaint you will have to go for many thin layers in order to cover the plastic and get an even finish.

Good luck!
