Burning Oil

I have been noticing for a while now that my car is burning a lot of oil. I have a 2.0L non-turbo auto.(girls old car...couldn't get a diff. one) As long as she had it, and now it will burn through about 5qts in 2.5 months. When I start the car is when the most amount of smoke is seen, but it will smoke while driving. Lately its begun to sputter when I take off from a stand still. The sputter feels like either a bad misfire, or the engine is hungry for fuel. The only add-on I've made is an intake. I'm trying to get an idea of what would be the best route to figuring out/fixing the problems, and if its even worth it to do the repairs.
Thanks for any help/tips.

Welcome to AF.

You should probably think about doing a compression test on it so you can see what kind of condition the motor is in. Smoke at start up sounds like valve stem seals but 5 quarts in 2.5 months is a lot of oil. Does it have any leaks or just burning all of it? It may be time for a rebuild. The studdering could be caused by a few things, I would check the plugs on it first, since its burning oil its probably fauling those out quickly.
