So i have come upon the oppurtunity to buy a 95-96 (not to possitive which one) s-10 reg. cab long bed with the 4.3 vortec for 900$ the only problem is it has over 160,000 miles on it. it runs rather smooth and i do believe most of the miles are highway miles. i just need to know how long the expected life of an s-10 is and if i buy it what kind of touble will i be in for...any comments appreciated

if it has been taken care of well, then shouldn't have too much trouble with it. but a few of the common problems are leaking intake gaskets, front end looseness, parts wear out over time. i saw one with 250K miles on it, and still going strong, and not one item missed on regular maitnance. bying used is always a gamble, but for $900, who knows. you may want to take it to a shop and have then check it over before you buy.

for $900 sounds like a good deal even though i haven't seen it or looked at it. just take care of it. my motto for buying used is always the same. oil change, spark plug/wires and so on. don't care if they were just replaced and oil was just changed, that way i know somewhat where i am starting from.

I purchased my '94 four years ago for $600, and it's still running fine with 165k on it. Of course living in Rust York has taken it's toll on the rocker panels and cab corners. I really don't mind that, as the 4wd works, a/c works, and I prefer having a not-so-pretty vehicle to run woods trails with. I don't care if it gets a scrape from a rock or tree branch. It's a lot more fun when you don't have to worry about that $25K vehicle.

In general these trucks last forever. I would not be shy about buying a high mileage one.

My 1988 S-10 with a 4.3 Got 422'000 motor has never been opened ...
I bought it new and retired it in 2007 .
They last a long time if you do take care of them ...

My 1990 S10 Ex. cab had about 179,000 miles on it when we got it, and so far it still runs alright (although the air has quit blowing out of the vents, probably needs another switch). It has 216,500 miles on it now. I don't drive it except on occasion due to high gas price$. :(
