Unknown code

Well, back again. The wifes 2000 sl2 ~140,000 miles has a SES light come back on. My wife went by autozone to get a scan, and the guy said that it was an unknown code, either 404 or 1404, she couldn't remember which. He said the reader said something about manufacturer emission control, but it was nondescript as to the causes. Any ideas??

Also, how hard is it to replace the motor on the driver side window motor. It's going in and out where it works sometimes and not others.

And, the rear passenger window appears to have jumped the track. If you roll it down, it won't roll itself back up unless you put downward pressure on it the entire time while rolling up, if that makes any sense.

She's talking new car with all these issues, but I really want to get another few years out of it.

Thanks guys.

p1404 is defined as "Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Closed Position Performance"

If this is your code, you most likely have carbon built up on the pintle of the EGR valve. Usually a good but careful cleaning will take care of this. Use some carb cleaner and a tooth brush to clean away the gunk.

p0404 is defined as "EGR Flow CKT Range/Perf". and is very similar to the above code except that replacing the EGR valve might be necessary. Also, when completing any repairs, the codes must be cleared by a scan tool and the ignition keyed off for at least 10 seconds before normal operation can resume.

Ok, thanks for the info. I plan to take it back by autozone to try to get it re-read and see which it is, but for now it's gone off again. It seems to come and go.

I haven't looked and can't remember right off the top of my head, so is the EGR on the right side of the engine almost right beside the valve cover, two bolts holding it in and a big black cylinder on the top with the plug?

It's on the left side of the engine (always refer to the sides of a vehicle from the perspective of sitting in the drivers seat).
