2.4 question

Most likely a stupid question but is the 1996 & Up 2.4L motor also called a 2.4 TC Quad 4?

96+ is 2.4L Twin Cam but it's pretty much the same thing. Twin cam = 2 cams = DOHC = Dual over head cam

Quad4 2.3L = DOHC = (Twin cam)

Ok thanks for the info. I was thrown off a little bit by Mantapart.com's website because it has parts for the Quad 4 2.3L and the Quad 4 2.4L and I thought the 2.4L was diff. than the Quad 4 2.4L.

Yeah their website is pretty confusing but I didn't mean both 2.3 and 2.4 were exactly the same. Most parts aren't interchangable without modification. I meant they're the same in the sense that both are 4 cylinders and are DOHC's

Yeah I know you didn't mean there the same but the 2.4 TC Quad 4 is the 96+ 2.4L correct

Well, in fairness, they are pretty much the same thing. But all the little things they changed in the 95-96 years...well...I'm just not sure they made the right call with how they took that motor.

I, for one, would happily give up the smoother idle for a higher, faster revs and more power. But, that's what happens when they have to bend to the average consumer.

2.3L != 2.4L

If you need further proof, consult your calculator.

Somewhat yes. It's not like you can just swap over parts tho.

basically its in the same family its the GM Quad-4 Engine that has been around since 1987 receiving updates and redesigns. was not taken out of production till 2002. the ECO is in another family. obviously you can't take parts and just bolt them up to the other models but it is alot more doable then trying to put on a part from the GM's other engines.

But basically from what I understand the 1995 and earlier models are the 2.3L Quad 4 and the 96+ is the 2.4L Quad 4 or what? The reason I'm wondering is I want to order the cams and some other 2.4L Quad 4 parts from Mantapart.com

that is correct. as long as it says 2.4L Quad-4 you have the correct part but you obviously haven't heard of the secret cam swap (which isn't much of a secret anymore lol).

this is cut and pasted from another forum it is not mine.

"Next I found the specs for the Mantapart street cams:
Mantapart Mild Cams Specs
198 degrees @ .050" with .360" lift for the intake
201 degrees @ .050" with .374" lift for the exhaust

What I saw was this:
1995 Cam Specs
200 degrees @ .050" with .360" lift for the intake
200 degrees @ .050" with .360" lift for the exhaust
LD2 (1990+) Cam Specs
200 degrees @ .050" with .375" lift for the intake
200 degrees @ .050" with .375" lift for the exhaust"

you just need an intake cam from a 95 (because of the hex key powersteering) and the exhaust from an LD2. since they are stock cams from GM or where ever you find them some people sell them, they are cheaper then performance ones with the same effect. after all they are only 2 degree on the intake side and 1 degree on the exhaust and .001 more duration on the exhaust difference.

but to each his own if you'd prefer having Mantapart cams I can understand. although I've heard mostly bad feedback about them.

I've heard about the secret cam swap but I thought that I would have to change some stuff. As far as the Mantapart cams thats about the only place I know that sells them.

I don't know of anything special you have to do. from what I've read its basically plug and play because the 95 Intake Cam has the Hex shaft for the power steering pump and the Cam postion sensor.

"The 2.3 and 2.4 are very similar in design, but have some very different parts in them both. Lucky for us the camshaft towers (where the camshafts sit), are the same for both engines and there fore are the same camshafts."

now while you have it opened up you might want to do some preventative maintenance and some you might have to do because you opened it up. like the tensioner shoe it will most likely fall apart when taking the timing chain off. so you might want to replace the whole thing (shoe, guides and the tensioner itself) along with the water pump. after all it would suck to put it all back together and a few weeks or even months something go wrong. of course you'll also want to do the gaskets. (even if you get the Mantapart ones all of this is a good idea)

now if you used the W41 cams you'd need to replace the exhaust cam housing and lifters but with the ones i'm talking about you'll be fine.
