PA 1994 - ODB, ODB 1.5 or ODB-2?

Hello. I have a 180k miles 1994 Park Avenue Ultra that lights the Service Engine Soon lamp now and then.

My old mechanic said it had something to do with the ignition electronics, but I moved to a new city and haven't found anyone here to help me yet. So I figure I might as well invest in one of those diagnostics tools and troubleshoot a bit myself.

Problem is, I can't find whether my car has older or newer ODB. I have scoured the 1500+ pages of the bibles that came with the car but the term doesn't appear anywhere.

I figure 1994 was precisely the transition period where some cars still used the old ODB, some had the new ODB-2 and some had weird cross-breeds in between.

Might anyone help me shed some light on this?

Thank you very much in advance!

Heh, I did search the forum for "ODB" and it came up with nothing. Now I see a post below that has to do with precisely this.

"The older OBD1 DLC used a 12-pin connector and alpha designation (A-M) to identify the pins. All 1996 and new OBD11 DLC used numeric designation (1-16) and have the same DLC configuration. 1994 & 1995 models using the OBD11 DLC with the OBD1.5 PCM, can have different pin outs, however, the configuration of the connector is the same."

So my car has the ODB 1.5 computer but the ODB 2 connector?

Are there any electronic gizmos out there that can read the codes for me? Like these:

You think the Actron CP9150 might work?

It comes with various adapters, it seems.

Yes it will work on obd 1.5.

The Actron CP9145 will also work. I use a Mac Tools 9145 (same as Actron) on 94 & 95 models. If you get the optional OBD I cable, you can read codes from the pre 94, 12 pin ALDL connector.

They even ship to Sweden, as opposed to a few others I tried to deal with...

Just thought I should tell you.
