My dad and I just recently got a 96 explorer xlt 4x4 and the abs light wont turn off. Are there any suggestions for repair. I know there are quite a few sensors but still don't know where to start Please help me trouble shoot.

the most common culprit on explorers is the rear spd sensor mounted on top of the diff housing. usually a code c1230 or something close to it saying rear spd snsr fault. try to get the codes from auto zone or somebody with a scan tool with abs capabilities

i know the rear end has a sensor on it and it was unplugged last i checked , i plugged it back in and the light is still on...and the obd II deals with abs also?

96 is borderline on it being obd II controlled, i just checked fords website and it says it is controlled in the dlc under the dash. do you know if it is 2 wheel abs or 4 wheel? either way i still say the rear spd sensor is the likely problem. but see if you can get the code pulled first before buying anything, it should be c1230 or something simular

Ok so being I am working with a similar problem on my ranger I have a question to add. Besides the sensor on the rear end are there any anywhere else? It is a 4x4 with a 4.0L engine.

If your Ranger has 4 wheel ABS, you will have a wheel speed sensor for each front wheel as well.

Sorry I wasnt asking about my ranger in this forum i was just saying that im working with the same problem on it. I was asking if there were sensors anywhere else on the explorer I found one on the rear diff. but it is a 4x4 4.0L 1996. Anywhere else to check ?

The same would apply to your Explorer, if it's 4WABS, you will have one sensor for each front wheel.
