AC Problem

blows hot air, tried to use a $30 recharge kit and the meter went to 65 psi and kept going up into the red and said see a specialist. i think its full of refrigerant but something else is screwed up. whats the most i can expect to pay to have it fixed? and is it a bad idea to even have it fixed if my engine tends to run hot on trips longer than 25 minutes? (only on highways though, i drive around the city all day and it don't get hot)

now i'm no fool but i know little about AC systems in cars. so i'm asking for a broad estimate of how much it could possibly run me. like "as little as ___ or as much as ___"

$30 recharge kit, eh? From a parts store? I really hope your car was retrofitted to R-134A from the R-12 you had from the factory.

Need more info. Is the conditioned air hot, or outer air temp? Is the hot-cold selector knob working? Does the AC compressor turn on at all? Does the light come on when you turn on the AC? Dont overfill the system!

What about when it "sounds like" there is a motor in the glovebox the size of the actual motor when its turned on high? Thats not normal right?

That rumbling from the blower is typically Chevy. Happened to me too. You have to take the blower out and try to balance it. The problem is the fan is all plastic, on a motor. The plastic tends to deform a little and the fan becomes unbalanced, at high rpm the unbalanced forces induce the effect, turning your blower into a jet engine. I managed to balance it out with a metal disc inserted into the lower part of the fan.

Is it bad for it? I like telling the passenger that im bout to go underneith the 18 wheeler next to us, but first i have to turn on the turbo, which is when i turn it to max ac, and they start freakin out cuz they think im actually goin to do it. Of course they have no clue about cars, and it only works once. =D

was a retrofit and recharge kit... and the video said R12 is mostly before 78. my cav. is an 89.... hey maybe i needed to have the R12 refridgerant removed first...?

the air is same temp as air would be coming from under the hood. i don't know about the compressor turning on or not. the temp light? no it doesn't come on.

Which year Cavaliar has the AC problem. I think it was starting in 1995 that all new cars began using R-134A Before that they used the old freon R-12. According to the clean air act only a licsened technican can work on the older models using freon (R12)! You can't buy Freon in a parts store, only the R134a. The Kit you used is for the newer Ozone safe, non flourocarbon models (134A)! :uhoh:

My tip, don't do it yourself. Nothing is quite as much fun as a lung full of freon.
Your system is more or less hot and will need plenty of stuff replaced if you charged a non-R134 system with R134. When you mixed the two (and their associated lubricants) you pretty much gunked the living hell out of your system.

You should either deal with the hot hair and use 2x4 AC (2 windows down on a 4 wheel vehicle) or pony up and pay to get it fixed (possibly your dad, if he has the right equipment).

Besides, unless you have the equipment you'd just be venting freon into the air, and that's just not cool in any way.

Well my AC compressor went out on my 98 sunfire last spring, and that alone was about 350 dollars. I can only imagine what a whole system would be..... anywhere for 500 too 1000 I would be guessing.
