Hi everyone
I am trying to isolate a clunking problem in the rear of the 2000 sunfire 131,000 km . this clunk pretty much sounds like a loose shock/strut. noticable on slightly rough roads. I have taken everything out of trunk including spare and jack, it is still there . Thought maybe it was muffler so I jammed a chunk of wood between it and body still same problem. Neighbor said his had loose rear speakers and put a bungee cord on them to hold them tight, I did this ,still clunking. is there anyway to check the struts and or mounts other than just the bounce test. Has ANYONE HAD an issue like this with there Sunfire . I bought new strut mounts but hate to put them in if there is a possibility that it may be something simple. struts are not leaking and springs look good . This is a heavy sounding clunk, Brakes are ok ,had the drums off last weekend cleaned the brakes up and adjusted them. It was doing this before the brake work was done so it is not related to that.
Thanks Muff

stock strut mounts are guaranteed by the manufacturer to last until you get off the car lot. in other words, the stock mounts are junk. Replace the entire assembly on both sides with name brand aftermarket units and you will be happy, I know I am. Especially since I had the same issue.

kept the spring, but Autozone sells a Gabriel setup that is complete minus the mounts. I just got the shock since they had to order the other part in for me. the spring is easy enough to swap out.
