I have a 93 J30. Mine does the same thing. Sometimes it goes to about 5000 rpm. I believe it is quite normal.

I believe it is because when a car is trying to go faster, the transmission will shift as if it has a long gear shift ratio to provide faster accelaration. This will yield a higher rpm.

I believe all cars do this no matter what gear you are in. Even on the highway when I am going about 70mph, when I want to pass another car, the transmission backs down a gear and the rpm goes up (to provice faster accelaration) and the car goes faster. When it settles in that gear, then it will shift up to the next gear to go even faster.

I've noticed this on my mom's '02 Altima and my previous 91 camry V6. I believe that this is normal for automatic transmission cars.

I am no expert, but I have experienced this also. Just my "two cents" for the matter!

Geoff.

P.S.

If you are still concerned check (which I am sure you have done already) your transmission fluid for the correct amount, color and viscosity.
