Hi i have a 1.4 16v Almera and i want to get more bhp out of it, i was going to put an air filter in but i don't know which type to put in, should I get a replacement elements or intake hit? seen on: http://www.roadrunnermotorsport.co.uk/index.asp?frame=/kandnprices.asp

Also if you have anymore low budget ideas to give my car more bhp it would be very helpful thanks :)

Fit a K&N replace hi-flow air filter, reasonable cheap mod. Iridium spark plugs make a difference too.

I've read that washing excess mud off the underside of the car can shave a few fractions of a second off acceleration times. (excessive mud and dirt on wheels and tires add to the dreaded "unsprung weight" which affects handling). And cleaning out the trunk/back seat/hatch area can drastically improve your average fuel milage. If the engine doesn't have to work as hard to accelerate the car (ie when the car is lighter) this accomplishes the same feat as increasing the power of the engine. If you want to get extreme, removing all non-structural body panels (with a sawzall if necessary) and stripping all sound insulation and interior, REALLY reduces the amount of work the engine has to do....wouldn't work very well in a temperate or especially arctic climate. Perhaps not as satisfying as a much more powerful engine, but certainly cheaper.
