Safety Feature

Hi guys, im thinking this is a stupid question but im hoping. I have a 97 sunfire 2.4L SE convertible and i live in MN so the mornings are pretty cold. Whenever i start the car every morning i cant get it out of park for like 10 mins. I know that your not suppose to drive a car until the engine has warmed up so im kinda hoping thats the reason. I bought the car back in August and the owner said it was in a bad storm and water got inside of the car so im thinking maybe its still moist and freezes up in the cold weather. If anyone could shed some light on this problem i would greatly appreciate it.
