I drove the car 100 miles yesterday to get to WI and about 5 miles before i reached my destination my battery light came on. I checked all of the connections and it all seemed fine. I drove the car another 15 miles and then the abs idiot light came on, then cd player died all the lights in the car started dimming, blinkers stopped working and whenever i turned the ignition off it wouldn't turn start up again. I think my alternator died and therefore my battery died soon after but im not sure so i would appreciate any suggestions. If i do need a new alternator should i charge the battery fully first?

Your alternator died a premature death on you. You will need to replace it. Also have the battery charged with an battery charger before trying to restart the car. An alternator will not recharge a battery only maintain it so to avoid damaging the new alternator recharge first.

Thanks alot for the quick response GTP. Replacing the alternator doens't look like too much work so hopefully i can do it myself. I am just loving AAA right now, 105 mile tow for just $15.

When you change the alternator make sure you remove the positive battery lead first. If not you could short out the wiring and fry the new alternator. Just a good safety measure.

I replaced the alternator and the battery light doesn't come on anymore but the car still died on me. Same problem as before, ABS went out first and everything else followed. Does anybody have any ideas what it could be now? Seems to me like the alternator isn't charging, could it be something as simple as a faulty belt, i've been told the problem is in my battery too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you didn't change the battery it is probably bad due to the alternator. The ABS light often comes on due to low voltage. One other item you may want to check is the crank position sensor. They will cause a car to stall unexpectedly. But start with the battery.

Idd check the belt cause if the alt. is not charging the battery that could be wrong. (by the way where'd you go in WI (caus i live in Green Bay)(just curious)?)

I bought a new belt today but the car seems fine for some reason, i left it charge on slow for like 18 hours and now its driving fine, I'm just gonna let it go a few days just to make sure everything is ok before i replace the belt.
I was in Eau Claire WI.
