I have a 2001 cavalier, my check engine light came on and the code reads 0440. Any idea on what I need to fix the problem? Also, I misplaced my code checker, will disconnecting the battery clear this code.

P0440 is evaporative emissions control system failure, often caused by a loose gas cap or refilling tank with engine still running. Sometimes caused by other issues such as bad purge canisters, leaky fuel system, or bad solenoids (purge or vent). Can be a real pain to eliminate if none of the usual fixes work... hope yours is just the fuel cap.

I have a 01 cavvy its a hard code so even if you clear it will come back what it is a random vacumm check the vehicle does while you are driving the random check failed so this light came on i changed my gas cap but to no avail you need to drop the tank and check all the vacuum lines and charcoal filters that are in there you may need to change the charcoal canisters ......all this according to my mechanic ...... mine has been like this for a year he said it won't effect anything but if a red light comes on pull over and call a tow truck *typical* since its come on i haven't had a probelm its just a apin in the ass to get it fixed .
