Check Engine Light

Hello I have a 2001 Qx4 3.5 Liter engine with only 38k miles on it. Surprisingly the "check engine" light came on yesterday. I was wondering if there is simpler way of reading the code without a scanner? Or do I have to go the dealer or an auto shop. Could be a Oxygen sensor. Is there any danger or harming the engine if I wait a few months before checking it? I heard of people driving for months and doing nothing.
I was wondering if any body here had any experience in dealing with the engine codes. Any chance this "check engine" service is covered by the 6 year engine warranty?
I had a very bad experience 2 weeks ago with my 98 Nissan maxima which the "check engine" light came on. It was an Oxygen and a knock sensor. I took it to my mechanic that I have use for years. I was shock and angry when he charge me $680 to scan and replace the 2 sensors! I was stupid to allow the service :banghead: But what done is done. I certainly would go back to him again. :disappoin
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

2000 and earlier had a screw on the computer that allowed you to retrieve the codes without a code reader, 2001 and later don't have that anymore. You really need to find out what the code is before anyone can tell you anything about it, try Autozone or a local auto parts store that will read it for free.

Oh I didn't know that Autozone will do a free scan check. Hopefully the autozone here in NY is the same like other states? I do have an Autozone near by. Thank u for the info.

try clearing the computor first and see if it comes back if it does take it back to the shop that put it on they forgot something or damaged something (like the sensor)
oh and do you know this is a nissan (pathfinder) forum thread :iceslolan

If this is the first time you have seen it, then I think I have bad news. The rear o2 sensors on the pathfinder had some problem, where the computer had to be reprogramed, and the sensors replaced. It is a tsb not a recall item.
