Just wanted to let people know about the light.
Mine kept coming on, I checked everything, even took stuff apart, cleaned and replaced.
Still the light kept coming on.
I brought hame a (StayIce) for those of you that dont know what that is,
it's a unit that the military uses to check electrical and mechanical problems. Anyone that has been in a motor pool at Depot level will know what I am talking about.
Nice unit, about $11,000.00.
Found no probs with my Xterra, so I took the LED out for the service engine soon slot.
I did however replace it with another bypassing the ECG unit,
No more problems.
In the process I removed some other items that were usless, the Xterra breathes much esier now.

I am by no means an expert.
But I have been building engines for some time.
I have come up with no other explanation (after thorough investigating)
for the light to be on except for a short, I did not want to trace every wire to find it, so like I said, I took the LED out and bypassed it with another, and have had no other probs.
And yes the new light still lets me see trouble codes.
:)

Did you ever read the code with an OBD II reader?

Yes I do have an OBD II reader, I had connected it several times over the course of a week , with no codes reading incorrectly, I even took it into the Nissan dealership I bought it from, they could not tell me anythind either, except that it was prob a short.
I still connect it (OBD II) from time to time with the same results, NOTHING.
so out it went.
I am reasonable sure that if there is a problem, I will notice it when it starts.

Is there a way to check the codes by using the key?
Example: On my previous car (Dodge Ramcharger), you can check the codes by turning the key on and of three times within 3 to 5 seconds (without starting the eng). The light would blink a number of times and reveal the code.
Does the Xterra have something similar? Trying to find it

No, but the 2000 models have a small screw on the side of the ECU itself that is turned to get the light to flash out the codes. Only the 2000 models have it.
