Differences Eco/LD9

I hope this doesn't start a whole Ecotec Versus LD9 argument.. but what's the difference between the two? Layout wise? Valves? Pistons? Timing? Cams? The whole thing?

If this question's already been answered please direct me to the nearest thread? I can't seem to find one ><. I have lost many a night of sleep over this.

And how's this 2.4L Ecotec coming along? Are our LD9's toast or is it hype I hear about this new Eco?

Followup: Did some searching while at work. Found a page on the LD9 if anyone cares it's http://www.quad4forums.com/darkfox/Spec.htm

No the 2.4 EcoTec isn't hype it will appear in a staunr and a pontiac later this year! Shush though! It's not actually all that different from the ld9!!

The Ecotec 2.2 has .5:1 more comp ratio (10:1). The cam lift is good but the duration very short which makes me think that the cams will be more or less shot before the car hits 100,000 miles! It's alu block and head on the eco and the block on the ld9 Iron! It doesn't really differ too much in design and some people think it's a re-worked LD-9. There is only one ecotec in the states currently if you could the destroked ss/ s/c and ion redline motor as the same. However in Europe where the EcoTec has been around for about 7 years there are 1l 1.2l 1.4l 1.6l 1.8l and 2.0l variants! The 1l being a 3 cylinder! Personally I hate that thing! (1l although the car it powers is smaller than an aveo)They have been reliable in the european forms but I don't know how similar the achitecture is to the 2.2l version. My buddy has a screen saver that shows an Ecotec going together it's good and very similar to the ld-9n from that!

So you're telling me I don't need to grab my credit card and start charging this 2.4L Eco to my credit eh? Ah all is well...

We'll just have to wait and see what this new Ecotec holds for us. yes I'm talking to all the new car owners in the latter part of this year, let me know what it's like.

does anyone know the specific specs on the 2.4L eco? I could prolly look it up, im just to lazy. I thought it was 170HP, but whats its compression? Im gonna guess its higher than 10:1, maybe 10.5:1.

as far as I know its 170 Horses, Beyond that there's not much that I know about it.

this is all I could find.

The combination of slightly more displacement and variable valve timing enables the Ecotec 2.4-liter to achieve one of the highest torque ratings – an estimated 170 lb.-ft. – for a 2.4-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder in the United States And the Ecotec 2.4-liter's 170 horsepower at 6000 rpm also is one of the highest specific-power outputs for any non-boosted four-cylinder of any size sold in the U.S., according to Ward's 2003 market data.

This is the first time i'd heard of the 2.4L ecotec. Was this brought up in the Cobalt forums Noshun? You've got me clueless on whats going on.

But do the F20c, K20, B22a have 170lbs of torque at ~4400RPM? Also the Ecotec 2.4 makes 90% of that 170 at 2400 RPM, and 170 at 6000RPM. Maybe they are saying it's the best US motor sold in the US, or that's what they should have said. Look at the torque curve here http://www.quad4forums.com/darkfox/Spec.htm I have never seen a torque curve that hits peak twice! Once at 2400 and again at 4400, any other motors like this? I'd like to find a site that has stock-trim dynos for newer 4cyl motors, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Chevys, etc.

So I suppose it holds true what noshun said? that the 2.4L Eco is just a reworked LD9? Hmm we might be on to something here.

i've never heard of this 2.4 eco. Are they throwing it in the cavalier for 2006? or what car is it going in? Fill me in - I'm looking at getting a new car and I can't decide between the Acura RSX Type S or Chevy Cobalt SS - both have their ups and downs... but I'd wait for another Jbody if its giong into a cavalier. Much cheaper overall. THanks
