I know valve clatter has been a problem for Honda Passports, but is there anything that can be done reasonably to get rid of this annoyance?

Your 2000 has solid lifters. You adjust them by adding and removing shims.Yes it is very costly. The 97 and back had hyd lifters.Carl

If you are referring to a clickedy-clickedy sewing machine kind of rythem at idle, that's about what the 1998+ 3.2/3.5 do. I've tried many different types of motor oil on my 2002 ranging from 15w-40 to 5w-20. It aways sounds the same. Doesnt bother me a bit anymore. A LOUD tap-tap-tap *could* warrant a valve lash adjustment. Like BIAR says, valve lash is adjusted by shims (washers). Very costly adjustment.
