I was driving my 92 explorer, not beating it or anything, and it started to slip like a tranny going bad. I pull it into my driveway, came out a ouple hours later, put it in reverse, and it woudlnt go. It acted like a jammed ebrake. It goes into gear and everything, and when i give it gas in reverse, the engine tourques and has a load on it but it wont move. Jacked it up and wheels move forward but not back like something jammed. Took the pan off the rear diff, oil was a little nasty but no visible chips, and it all looked good. Then i jacked up the diff so i could roll it onto the road with the jack, and once it was on the road again, it goes forward, but seems sluggish. Also, i will go halfway up a hill, put it in neutral, and it just sits there, not rolling back. Please help me out, its definetly not the e brake.

Thanks Matt

I would start with a brake inspection on all 4 wheels. Do the fronts first. Jack up one front corner at a time and see if each wheel rotates freely. If front OK then jack up the whole back end, don't forget to block the front wheels. Release parking brake and rotate each rear wheel separately. Remove drums and inspect the brake shoes, wheel cylinders etc. I suspect that you may find something there. While you are there look at emergency brake cable assembly. Cable may be frayed and is hanging up on something and is not releasing completely. Do post your solutions. Good Luck.

Lots of times rear brake hardware breaks and the car won't go backwards. It kinda jams the shoes between the pivot point and the drum. It's always backwards, hardly ever forwards why? I don't know.
