Hi :

I have a 200 VW Jetta with VR6. Does anyone know how the heck to get the battery out of this thing? It is extremely cold right now in Toronto and I am having a tough time trying to figure it out in a minimum amount of time in the cold.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jon

There's a 13mm hold down bolt at the base. Note that most often when you disconnect the battery on this engine it will not restart as it will need a throtle valve adaption performed. Sometimes you luck out & it starts (runs badly) & it can relearn over time.

I just replaced the battery in my wife's 2001 Jetta 1.8T.

You need to remove the top cover from the battery box. This should lift at the front and then you can detach it at the plastic hinges at the back.

Next remove the front part of the plastic box surrounding the battery. (This is the plastic box with the foam inside. This box has two pieces. One piece consists of the front and sides. You only need to remove this piece.

First, remove the 10mm bolt at the front, left bottom of the box. (This will be outside the box). You'll need a socket extension or you could try using a long common blade screwdriver to turn the socket. The bolt should not be very tight.

Next, there are two plastic tabs on the left rear corner of the box that hold the front piece and rear piece together. Work these tabs loose from the front piece. You then should be able to lift out the front piece of the box. You may need to detach the positive battery cable from the left side of the box.

Now there is a bracket holding the front base of the battery to the battery tray. Remove the 13mm bolt securing this bracket. Again, you'll need a socket extension or a long screwdriver with a wide blade to turn the socket.

If you haven't do so already, disconnect the battery cables.

You should be able to lift the battery out at this point.

Installation is the reverse.
- Install the new battery
- Connect the cables
- Replace the bracket holding the battery base with the 13mm bolt
- Replace the front piece of the plastic battery box, secure the plastic tabs at the left rear of the box.
- Replace the 10mm bolt securing the plastic battery box
- Replace the top of the plastic battery box

- Reprogram the radio station presets and the clock

Good luck
