Check engine light-lean mixture code

My son's 2000 Accent keeps setting off the check engine light. Every time it indictaes a lean mixture code. The gas cap and Ox. sensor have recently been replaced - but the car sets off the light about 10 miles after it is reset. The car has about 106K on it now, and, seems to run just fine. Anyone else ever had this problem and have an idea what else might cause it.

if i was to guess, i would say you have been getting a p1128, and your accent has a 1.5l? am i right...... than you need to replace your maf. Only two screws and the part is fairly inexpensive. also check to make sure you have no airleaks past the maf first...intake boot, vacum line, intake gastket etc. let me know if that fixes the problem. If the part is a little to spendy and u have access to a scan tool with maf(G/H) and rpm readout and u want to verify the maf then let me know if it is an auto or a manual and i will give u the specs to check..... later

Take a look at the thread I started with the "2000 Accent P1128" post. Looks like we have the same error.

We appear to have solved the problem. After checking for air leaks, we unplugged the MAF and found its connector was a bit dirty. After cleaning it up, we pluggeg it back in the sensor, and the check engine light is now off. Hopefully it'll stay that way. Appreciate the advice on this.

to oldengineer u said that the electrical connector had poor conntacts and u cleaned them and plugged it back in and it fixed it......cool......most of the time I find that the hot wire film is the one that needs cleaning remember to use a cleaner safe for plastics if attemping....beats the crap out of spending a hundred+ dollars!

Unfortunately the check engine light is back on. My son drove the car about 200 miles without the light. As soon as he stopped and put gas in the car, and, restarted it, and drove about 5 miles, the light popped back on. Looking back, he thinks after a reset,that the light always popped back on after a refuel. Could we be dealing with a bad cannister purge valve???

What error code are you actually getting? If it is the P1128, while it could be the cannister evap valve as you suggest, you never really cleared the MAF sensor either. I had the 1128 error, called the local dealer tech rep and he told me to look at the flexible pipe that connects the 2 catalytic converters. They said often times, this hose will leak. Mine was ok. After doing the visual checks recommended on hmaservice.com website, I took car to dealer. They found bad MAF sensor. They wanted $270 for sensor, fortunately, I found one at a salvage yard for $75 with a 30 day warranty. I just replaced it yesterday, so we'll see if this takes care of problem. Usually would run several days after resetting on previous troubleshooting attempts, so we should know in 3 to 4 days.

to oldengineer I have repaired dozens of p1128 on the accent. it is always the maf so just replace it.

do what maz says...its the MAF had same problem , but much worse cause the car would not run properly. my MAF was totally dead and was dying for some time...car always ran pretty good so i ignored it ...

I too would like to know as my daughter has her lite on too. The used car place reset the ck engine lite cause it went off 1/4 mile down the road after she bought it. Said it was a sensor but it's back again 1500 miles later. All runs fine but!!!!
