Hey, Ive got a 1990 ford tbird LX (3.8) with an automatic tranni and Im looking to get a new shift knob for it. Does anyone know how to remove the old shift knob thats on there? I know usually theres a staple or set screw or something, but the shift knob is completely encased in the rubber, and i cant find anything that would hold it on. Thanks

Pull upward with force.

so just pull up? ok. Do I have to worry about breaking anything inside the shifter? (ie, linkage, etc)?

if it has overdrive be careful u don't want to break the wires

it has overdrive, but its not an extra button on the side of the shifter, its just another option on the drive select (it goes P R N OD D 1). Do I still need to worry about wires?

I was also wondering, since the stock shifter is a t handle with a side push button, will a shifter with the button on the top still work (sorry if these questions are stupid, but I've never done anything with shift knobs before, and I want to make sure before I waste time and money)?

yes because all the tide button does is push down the button on the top lol it's ok about the questions that is what the forum is for

are you guys all sure about the "just pull it up forcefully" thing? I tried and tried to pull it off, but it wont budge.

There should be a pin on the front side (side facing the dash) that you should be able to pull out. Haven't removed an 89-93 shifter before, but in my 96 there was a staple-pin on the front side that i just had to pull out.

you have to push the button in, then pull up.

Yeah, I have a 94 T-bird and it has electrical tape on the shift knob. Now I have no idea why it is there but I do have a replacement knob taken from another T-bird. How do I do the swap? This one obviously has the electric o/d button so what special thing do I need to do? And what is that light next to the shifter? The car doesn't have an owner manual anymore so I dont know what the light is there for.

NVM, I figured it out today. I took off the trim around the shifter and then had to unscrew the plate that is actualy sorounds the shifter (the part with the PRND21). Then popped the pin out disconnected the OD electrical cord and pressed the button in and pulled up. Thing came right off. Then did the oppisite to re-attach the "new" one.
