Ok. heres the deal. I need to tune up my 1991 Escort Lx 1.9 . What are the best plugs i can use? I noticed alot of people say stay away from bosch platnium 4. I want something that will improve my MPG a little bit so what do you think I should use? And what else should I include on my tuneup.

I plan on including the following
Transmission Filter
Fuel Filter
Plug Wires
Transmission Mount
Flush Antifreeze
Oil Change
Theromostat

Anything Else?

I used Bosch platinum - $1.99 at autozone-part #4212...only been in a short time but they seem ok...3 different Autozone guys said they like them - last long, burn clean. Go to autozone.com and input your vehicle data, then search spark plug....you'll get about 15 plugs for your escort....Motorcraft, Bosch, Autolite, Champion.

Do stay away from platinum +4 from what I've read.

Plug wires? Maybe I'd change but I'd check the spark produced from the wire first with an inline tester - tester goes on spark plug and then into plug wire - it has a window to show the current moving thru - if they all look bright and symmetrical, I doubt I'd change plug wires.

Fuel filter - I changed mine at 169k but I was chasing a check engine light that I thought may be fuel related but wasn't. I wouldn't have changed otherwise.

Tstat - unless your temp is too hot or too cold, I doubt I would change. My 93 1.9L runs too cold and I've tried 2 new tstats without success - the problem appears to be a poorly designed tstat housing...see overcooling threads.

Flush antifreeze - good. Also d/c your heater core hoses and run a garden hose stream thru it.

Tranny filter - sure

I used Autolights 5144(double check the 5144 number) gapped at .055". I used the regular(cheap) plug wires. I stay away from ANY platnium plug...I never saw any platnium tip on any plug when I pulled them out of a car that came with them, including my LS1 and if its not on the plug, that means it fell off and bounced around your combustion chamber until pushed out or fused on the head somewhere. Change'n plugs/wires should improve your mileage a bit..depending on the condition of your car.

Depending on the O2 sensor, get a Bosch sensor while your at it. 7/8 wrench to get it off..I had to get it from the bottom(loosen/tighten)..just loosen it up and turn it out by hand from the top.

Tranny filter, Fuel Filter..just get a regular one..I have a 5 speed, so I didn't have to mess with a tranny filter. Fuel filter, just look it up in the books at autozone or where ever you shop at.

As far as anti-freeze...I just used the regular green stuff from Wal-mart.

Oil, 10w30 valvoline(sp?) with a filter

Thermostat...if you're isn't overheating(tstat staying closed) I wouldn't touch it..but if you want to change it out....if you live in a colder climate, I'd get a 180* thermo...if you live down south/warmer climate, I'd get a 160*. 180* up north so you have some real heat in the winter...with a 160* stat, it takes a while to get warm and then its so-so on the warmth. I know..I did that with my 91 5.0 :lol2:

Hope this helps, need any more info, I'll try to help...just shoot me a PM or email.
