Just got this one over the weekend as well as the Falken R32 kit. So far I've just opened up the doors. Anyone have any shots of this car? I've had some trouble looking for reference material on these Group A and Group N cars.

Thanks!

May I ask what method you used to cut out the doors? They look so clean. Looks like an ambitious project...good luck.

Hi.

The doors were cut out using some nylon thread. It really wasn’t that hard at all. The one thing I did do before using the thread was to use my narrowest panel line scriber and go through the line I’m going to scribe a couple times over. This helps narrow the plastic and makes my thread cutting much easier.

Thanks for the pix Oli! Where did you get these from (or what did you search under)? I’m really interested in interior shots and that of the engine bay and trunk areas. I held off on removing the trunk lid as I wasn’t sure what the insides of that would look like.

I’m still contemplating how to do the door hinges to make them look somewhat realistic or at leas hide them so they don’t look too out of place. Any ideas?

Got a bit done on this one but looks a bit plain to me... I have to fix the fitment between the wheelwells in the interior (the slight gap doesn't sit well with me.)

Just a bit of sanding should fix the gap issue, like here:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/111698watermark.jpg

I'm actually making a similar project (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=320660) in the street section, but i didn't had to extend the wheel wells.

I'll be watching this one for sure ! :grinyes:

Great job scratchbuilding those door sills, you really know your stuff!
Amazing that the chassis needed to be extended out so far.

Took me a while to find this tread back (I mis-spelled Axia).

I've started to pick up this project again and I'm looking to work on the doors as well as the trunk. I've tried looking for reference material for the inside of the door. Does anyone know if the door is stripped clean or does it still utilize some sort of panel on the inside?

I've some ideas on how to make the door hinges as well as to hinge the trunk. I thought the trunk would be empty but I found this on the internet for a race Skyline with the trunk open (1:18 scale).

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/r32/trunk.jpg

Does anyone know what type of setup this is or if you guys have any pictures of something of this sort? I was told that it is their fuel management system but I can't confirm that. I've also exhausted google and yahoo for images with no luck. Help?

Thanks in advance!!

In Grp A regulations the standard inner door panels were to be retained. In Australia these regulations were enforced. Not sure about in Japan.

The inside of the boot has the fuel tank, pumps and associated electrical wiring. The 2 round things in the boot are refueling nozzles. You will note they line up with the round holes in the boot lid. The setup will be similar from race team to race team.

This looks like a cool build. Didn't Tamiya have like 5 or 6 cars based off that same basic Skyline kit?

Hi appleseed,

nice work / scratchbuilding so far.

Just let me warn you - I built the kit about 12 years ago and when it was finished, I brought it to the model-shop for exhibition. There it was standing at a bright place -not direct sunlight- for some weeks and that made these decals fade out.

I don´t know if your decals are newer / better, but you should know this, as it seems to turn out a nice model.

malscar- Thanks for the info on the boot setup and the door panels. That makes one less task for me to research!

boostspike- I'm more than happy to take you up on that offer for pics of your 1:18!! I'm halfway through cutting through the boot area out and it just wouldn't be worth the effort if I didn't know what to reveal in there! Thanks!

SteveK2003- I believe that sounds about right... I still have the Falken kit and I think there was the HKS, Calsonic, and the Zexel kits as well. I'm not sure but I recall seeing a green Castrol kit as well.

sportracer02- That's a scary thougth that the decals fade! I sure hope that doesn't happen to this kit when I finish it off but only time will tell. Thanks for the warning.

I finished removing the trunk lid. I reinforced the area with some styrene sheet to give it some strength. When that dries, I’ll see what I can do to replicate the rain gutter underneath the trunk lid. I'll still have to clean up the fitment as the removal process took away much more plastic than I had wanted. I used photoetched scribers this time around. I need to be more careful with them in the future as I wasn’t scribing as perpendicular as I thought I was. No matter, a layer of plastic sheet should take care of the fitment easily. I'm more than happy that the rear glass fits well with the trunk rubber and that the reinforced styrene does not obstruct fitment with the rear deck. Now I have to think about how to 'dress-up' the inside of the trunk. No going back now :shakehead ...

Nice work! I'll definately follow this thread :) As for other Tamiya R32 race cars, they had two Castol ones, one was a Group A and the other a Group N.

Thanks for the interest guys. I've made a bit of progress over the weekend and tweeked some of the fitment with the trunk lid as well as the underbody/body fitment. There's still some need for tweeking. I'm not too happy with the large(er) gap above the left brake assembly thus that's being worked on (after the pic was taken.)

boostspike- Thanks for the pics! Is there some way you can get a couple more from various angles? I can't seem to tell how the horizontal bars are mounted nor the number of those gold cylinders (I can't tell if they're relections or not). I really appreciate the pictures you've taken for me thus far. Thanks!

This is excellent work on what I think is a fairly rare kit? I have one ready to be built on the pile, but looking at this I think it may have to wait until I get a bit better!
Look forward to seeing your results with the all-over-the-bodyshell decals too.

boostspike- Thanks for the effort! Those pictures are gonna come in handy when I try to mock up something that hopefully resembles something that should belong in there.

I got a good start on the door panels. Its proving to be a bit of a challenge now as the dashboard is/was originally supposed to fit into the interior tub that Tamiya provided. This leaves the dashboard tapered a bit inwards and leaves quite a gap between the door panel and the dashboard. I'm not too sure how to go about it just yet as the windshield would make any alterations to lengthen the dashboard areas to the door panels quite apparent. The curvatures just don't work out.

I've taken picture to show how my door panels are progressing thus far. In one shot, you see that the rear panes need some work as it just looks too one dimensional. It needs to be curved a bit and an arm rest inserted in there somehow. A similar treatment is probably necessary for the doors as well as they just look too flat. The last shot shows my start at creating the panels for the rear. Getting them to look just right and have it curve inwards is going to be a challenge. Now if there weren't any panels back there, I could just mock up some indentations here and there to mimic the bare metal, and leave it flat. If only I could take that shortcut...

Thanks for the interest and help guys!
