I have a 2000 X. When I turn the switch to change vents the air never changes (keeps coming out of the windshield defrost vent). The switch doesn't feel right when it turns. Any help would be appreciated.

It's attached to a cable, I bet it's loose, either at the control end, or the other end down in the ductwork.

Hi,
I have about 128K miles on my Xterra, and have an issue with the vent knob as well. I cannot get it to go back to the front vent. It's stuck on the floor vent/defogger vent. When I tried taking off the dash in attept to get at what the problem is I noticed that the hazzard flashers and defroster button are attached with no slack to a cable I cannot get to given the space provided. I ordered a manual to help me try and dissconnect it, but have no clue if this will provide any help. Please let me know if you find out how to fix/repair your knobs for I am in search of the same info.

You have to disconnect the wiring connectors from the back of the switches so you can fully remove the dash trim.

Well I do see the cables, and know they need to be dissconnected, but I cannot reach to dissconnect them. I have less than an inch of room, and my fingers (even with tools) cannot get to them to dissconnect them for there is no slack on the cables that allow me to do so. There is a slim chance I could dissconnect them, but absolutely no chance of reconnecing them. I was going to try and see if I can unbundle the cables if they are tied back behind the stereo or something. Any suggestions?

So are you saying you still can't get the dash trim off, or you have and now you can't get at the cables that operate the duct/vent controls? Can't help you with the latter I'm afraid...
