I bought the car in late March. There wasn't an alternator belt on it so I got one put on. As soon as the mechanic put it on it started squealing. I tried the belt dressing but I had to use that 3 or 4 times a day. Another mechanic then tightened the belt. It stopped squealing for a couple of months.
Now it squeals when I turn the car on. It stops after a few seconds. Unless I have the lights or the heater/defroster/AC on. Then it squeals nonstop.
Is this an alternator problem? I wanted to ask before I bought a new alternator.
Thanx in advance.

when u say that a couple things come to my mind. one the belt is loose again try tightning it again. and 2 whenn u turn on the ac/heater it skeaks that may be ur ac compressor being low on oil check and make sure all pumps and such arent low on fluid, it deffenetly wouldnt have anything to do with the alternator, that i could thnk of. hope i helped

there are 2 bolts to tighten the alternator one on top and one on bottom.. if the top one only is tight and not the bottom 2 you'll have all kinds of funny wear and squeaking

I have the same problem with my '91 323. I'm not sure what it is, but my guess is the alternator belt needs replacing. Thing is, mine only squeals when it's cold. The belt would be my guess.
