VW proceedure says to first change engine oil & clear code (you can disconnect the battery for 10 seconds). It's a pain of a code to get. It could be alot of things, oil dilution, throttle valve, fuel pressure and associated problems, injectors.... Most common seems to be the throttle valve goes bad.

Search through the Jetta forum that this thread was posted in for "P1582", there are several threads discussing the matter.

My '96 Jetta 2.0 L was giving me the same code for awhile as well, though it wasn't running too bad. I cleaned some things up (throttle body) and had the code cleared and it has yet to return. Best of luck to ya.

thanks guys for your feedback. the only thing i need help on is the removal of the throttle body. it doesn't look that bad but if anybody has done this before and would like to share some tips to make it a little easier for me please do so... thank you.
